Gang of 8 Immigration Bill Still Lacking Sufficient Border Security
Today Tea Party Patriots, the nation’s largest tea party organization, reacted to the introduction of an amendment to the Gang of 8 immigration bill by Sens. John Hoeven (ND) and Bob Corker (TN) aimed at luring unsure Senators to support the bill through tougher border enforcement.
At a press conference this afternoon hosted by Tea Party Patriots, Jenny Beth Martin, National Coordinator, along with Sen. Mike Lee (UT), Sen. Jeff Sessions (AL), Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) and a group of legal immigrants and family members of victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants, expressed their opposition to the Gang of 8 immigration bill.
“While we support any effort to strengthen our borders and protect Americans from criminal illegal immigrant activity, the Senate must actually write an amendment, read it, give the American people time to read and understand it, and explain why it’s necessary before rushing it through,” said Jenny Beth Martin, National Coordinator for Tea Party Patriots. “The Gang of 8 bill was negotiated behind closed doors away from the scrutiny of the American people. None of the Senators supporting this bill or the new amendment have taken the time to hear from people who work along our border or the family members of victims of illegal immigrant crimes. It’s unacceptable to continue this opaque process. Now we see that Sen. Harry Reid, with help from Sens. Corker and Hoeven, is working to rush a dubious amendment through, tabling all other amendments, and pushing for passage of the whole bill in the next few days.
“We want honesty, openness, and tough border enforcement in any bill, not a disguised amnesty. We urge any Senator on the fence to actually read any amendment and take extra time to consider its ramifications. Americans are sick of having bill after bill shoved down their throats in the dark of night behind closed doors.”
